Revolution

Within the Lake, Fire: the image of revolution. Flame burns beneath the water's surface, two natures that cannot coexist without one eventually transforming the other — a confrontation that necessarily leads to a change of state. Thus the noble one sets the calendar in order and makes the seasons clear: true revolution does not destroy for destruction's sake, it reorders what the old time had left confused.

Judgement
Momentum

The fire beneath the lake dissolves the old skin. Every deep change first requires the old form to dissolve, however uncomfortable that moment of transition may be. This line says the rightest revolution is never gratuitous — it answers a necessity the old form could no longer contain.

The six lines

First line

At the base of the earth, fullness stirs: the yang onset that carried the whole figure now yields its place.

Second line

The receptive earth reaches its fullness: the silent welcome that carried the lower figure is about to assert itself.

Third line

At the threshold between earth and man, force wavers: what acted through firmness hesitates before turning.

Fourth line

In the action of man, fullness meets its limit: the initiative that led the figure folds back upon itself.

Fifth line

At the sage's seat, fullness hollows out: the force that governed the figure from its center is about to invert.

Sixth line

At the summit, emptiness reaches its fullest extent and closes: the furthest opening turns toward its opposite.
