the eldest son
the middle daughter
Thunder and Lightning arrive together: the image of abundance. Movement and light reach their full unfolding at once — a moment of total plenitude, rare and necessarily fleeting. This is the figure of a peak that never lasts forever. Thus the noble one settles disputes and carries out punishments: at the height of abundance, clarity of judgment becomes more necessary than ever, for that is also where everything can tip over.
The hour of full noon, when light casts no more shadow. There exists an instant, at the summit of all plenitude, when nothing remains hidden — but this instant, by its very nature, can only decline afterward. This line teaches us to savor abundance without forgetting it carries its own limit within it.
The six lines
At the base of the earth, fullness stirs: the yang onset that carried the whole figure now yields its place.
The receptive earth reaches its fullness: the silent welcome that carried the lower figure is about to assert itself.
At the threshold between earth and man, force wavers: what acted through firmness hesitates before turning.
In the action of man, fullness meets its limit: the initiative that led the figure folds back upon itself.
At the sage's seat, emptiness fills: the suppleness that governed with discretion gathers a new force.
At the summit, emptiness reaches its fullest extent and closes: the furthest opening turns toward its opposite.
