La Livrée d'Hermès is a book of philosophy and mathematics, freely available at the link below. It is centered on the construction of magic squares and their transcription into Jacquard weaving.

Frequently asked questions

What are Unified Patterns?+

Unified Patterns are tessellation cells in which the corners echo the centre, so as to generate the frequency of a single pattern.

What are the constraints for creating Unified Patterns?+

Two constraints define a Unified Pattern. The first: giving one and the same colour to the two matrices of 6 elements produces a balanced 3×12 grid. The second: the sides of the grid must echo the centre.

How are Unified Patterns identified among the balanced grids?+

The first constraint (a single colour on the two matrices of 6) brings out a first series of 8 Unified Patterns within the set of balanced 3×12 grids. This is what makes it possible to tell, among the balanced grids, those that are specifically Unified Patterns.

How are these matrices classified?+

The classification uses the Jacquard system to generate and organise the balanced matrices and the Unified Patterns. Chapter VII of La Livrée d'Hermès is devoted to the binary classification of these matrices.

On which harmony has this system been verified?+

The encoding system has been studied and verified for the 12/12/6/6 harmony (four filling matrices arranged in two pairs of 12 and two pairs of 6 elements).
