Peace

Heaven and Earth unite: the image of peace. What should, by nature, remain separate — high and low — meets here and communicates freely, with no obstacle between them. This is the figure of accomplished harmony, where each force finds its complement rather than its adversary. Thus the sovereign shapes the way of Heaven and Earth and comes to the aid of all beings: peace is not the absence of movement, but exchange become fluid between forces that answer one another.

Judgement
Alliance

Heaven and Earth meet and exchange freely. When what is above consents to descend and what is below consents to rise, communication becomes total and fruitful. This line teaches that lasting prosperity is always born of this reciprocal exchange — never of a single imposed direction, always of a meeting where each gives and receives in turn.

The six lines

First line

At the base of the earth, fullness stirs: the yang onset that carried the whole figure now yields its place.

Second line

The steadied earth reaches its limit: the solidity that upheld the structure is about to change its nature.

Third line

At the threshold between earth and man, force wavers: what acted through firmness hesitates before turning.

Fourth line

In the listening of man, the hollow fills: the openness that received is about to assert itself.

Fifth line

At the sage's seat, emptiness fills: the suppleness that governed with discretion gathers a new force.

Sixth line

At the summit, emptiness reaches its fullest extent and closes: the furthest opening turns toward its opposite.
